Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Red Chillies - 1 cup
  • ½ cup Chana Dal
  • ½ cup Whole Urad Dal Black or white
  • 2 tablespoon Sesame seeds Black or white
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Salt as needed

Instructions
 

  • In a heavy bottomed pan, add the oil
  • Once hot, add the chana dal. Roasted on medium flame till it becomes golden brown. Keep it aside
  • Add the Urad dal. Roast till you get a nice aroma. Keep it aside
  • Add the red chillies. Roast till colour changes a little. Do not let it burn. Keep it aside
  • Add the sesame seeds. Fry till it crackles.
  • Remove and keep it aside.
  • Let everything cool and come to room temperature.
  • Add asafoetida and salt to this.
  • Grind it to a coarse powder
  • You can make a fine powder if you prefer it that way.
  • Store it in a clean dry air tight container
  • Serve with idli , dosa. It tastes the best when served with sesame oil drizzled on top of it.

Notes

My grandmother adds a pinch of sugar while grinding the powder. If you prefer that way, please do add it.
Store it in a clean, dry container.
Use a clean spoon every time. Do not use wet hands or wet spoons.
